Caterpillar Class
Our topic this Summer half term is ‘Food Glorious Food!’ The children will have the opportunity to participate in attention circles and games linked to the topic. Our book focuses will be ‘The Hungry Caterpillar’, ‘Kitchen Disco’ and ‘Handa’s Surprise’. The children will learn new topical vocabulary, which will include the appropriate Makaton sign.
Our Science topic is ‘Pushes and Pulls’. The children will explore different objects with magnets and will observe objects that roll. They will also be given opportunities to investigate cause-and-effect toys.
In English we will focus on our chosen stories. We will read the books regularly and use the story sacks with props to tell the story. The children will go to the library once a week to look at the books and enjoy listening to different stories. We will be encouraging the children to look at the pictures and we will talk about what we can see. In phonics, one group will be playing listening games, and the other group will be focussing on the individual sounds i, n, m and d.
In maths, the children will be in two groups. One group will be focussing on number rhymes and participating in attention circles related to the numbers 3 – 6. The other group will be focussing on circles and triangles. They will learn about the shapes and be encouraged to make pictures using the shapes.
During our making sessions the children will be exploring colours and textures, and will use different techniques to make masterpieces. We will make The Hungry Caterpillar, a beautiful butterfly, and fruit & vegetables. Caterpillar Class really enjoy our cooking sessions, and we look forward to continuing these. They will be making caterpillar fruit kebabs, mini pizzas and cheese twists.
On 6th May the children will start swimming. Please make sure they have their swimsuits and a towel every Tuesday in a named bag. We will build their confidence in the water by singing songs and playing games. We will also learn to move in different ways in the water.
It’s going to be a lovely half-term.
